New Client! So exciting!
Another Volunteer Gig!
Recently, I responded to a post in a FaceBook group I belong to. Within this post, there was a call to action and I immediately responded for multiple reasons (which I will illustrate later.) The call to action was to create a brand guide for PDX Women In Tech. They are a meetup group that gets together to network and talk about technology within the Portland area. It's a fantastic group of empowering women who's goal is to celebrate and encourage like minded individuals in multiple different fields. I have attended a few of their events and have always walked away with a great feeling of camaraderie and excitement for being a techy sort of person.
In my head, I thought, what a fun project this brand guide would be, and a great addition to my portfolio. I love creating identity systems and this would put my knowledge to the test. Plus the group is a great vehicle of empowerment for Women in Tech and was thrilled at the response I received when I posted my website. My primary aim was to see if my skills could be used in some way for this project. In no way did I envision that I would do much more than that.
I was immediately contacted (funny enough, I think I was the only response they received) and asked to have a quick little phone interview. We discussed many topics and the excitement and enthusiasm on both ends was palpable. Ultimately I agreed to a couple things, 1. to be their official graphic designer and be listed as such on their website (scroll down), and 2. did I want an official email address? (I said yes to both!)
So far, this has been another great experience and being able to give back to this community has been absolutely amazing. My hope is by doing all this great work, that I will secure a position somewhere where I'll be able to earn a decent living doing what I love.
One of our first projects was to create a graphic for an upcoming event. The event presenter being Tracy Bagli Hooper (presented by Zapproved + Intel.) This project was fast tracked because it was needed by the end of the week. I whipped this up:
Once loaded however, the logos at the bottom were cropped off. I set to work adjusting things and squeezing things a bit, retaining my grid design however.
While sure, there were some elements I could fine tune with time, I like were this ended up (especially with a quick turn around of only a couple hours.) Since this wasn't really a project that was fleshed out in any normal way... (like a lot of my other projects,) there isn't much more to mention. It may get it's own entry, it may not.
After sending this off, back to working on the other major project: the Branding guide.
